A339 Newtown Road, Greenham - Speed Limit Reduction
Work will soon begin to lower the speed limit on the A339 Newtown Road between Pinchington Lane and the B4640 (Swan roundabout) from 50mph to 40mph. The speed limit on the A339/Pinchington Lane roundabout will also be lowered from 50mph to 30mph at the same time. The decision to implement these changes was made by Individual Executive Member Decision following a public consultation.
To lower these speed limits, it will be necessary to:
Change existing signage from 50mph to 40mph or 30mph. Install new illuminated terminal signs on the A339 and remove redundant illuminated terminal signs on Monks Lane and Pinchington Lane
Replace and upgrade the Vehicle Activated Sign facing northbound traffic on the A339
Remove and re-lay road studs and lane lines. Install new speed limit road marking roundels.
Due to the requirement to amend the lane lines in the centre of the carriageway, it will not be possible to keep the road open during these works. Therefore, all work will be completed under 4 night closures from Tues 26th May 2026. The road will be closed from 19:00hrs – 05:00hrs each night and a diversion route signed via A343, A34, B4640 and vice versa. You can see the advised diversion route on one.network. Once the works are complete, the lower speed limits will come into force from Sunday 31st May 2026.
We appreciate how disruptive any road closure is, especially one on the strategic network so we will also be carrying out the following work under the same closure to maximise productivity:
Installation and extension of pedestrian guard rail near Deadman’s Lane
Street lighting maintenance and de-cluttering of illuminated signs and bollards
Refurbishment of pedestrian crossing traffic signals at northern end of A339, just south of Monks Lane. This equipment is old and much of it has reached the end of its normal operating life. The signals use halogen light bulbs that are not energy efficient and will be replaced with low energy LED (light-emitting diode) lamps. The traffic signal controller is now obsolete and will be replaced. We are also improving the forms of vehicle and pedestrian/cyclist detection.
Litter picking and road sweeping
